James Ponton II is the founder of Roof Advocates of Tampa Bay, better known throughout the industry as The Roof Inspector. As a licensed Realtor, entrepreneur, and Amazon bestselling author of Networking Isn’t a Dirty Word, James has built every business around one simple belief: educated people make better decisions.
James’s journey into roofing began nearly 20 years ago when he spent a summer installing roofs in Virginia in 2007. At the time, he never imagined it would become a defining part of his career. After building six other businesses, life came full circle.
While working as a Realtor, James experienced a real estate transaction that fell apart because of roof issues. Instead of accepting it as just another deal that didn’t close, he made a commitment that it would never happen again. Determined to better serve his clients, he immersed himself in roofing education, earning advanced industry certifications as a Haag Certified Roof Inspector, a BEI Certified Forensic Roof Inspector, and a BEI Certified Roof Repairability Assessor.
The combination of these specialized roofing certifications and an active real estate career is exceptionally uncommon. It gives James a perspective few professionals possess. He understands not only roofs and real estate, but also how the two directly impact one another. Whether helping a homeowner determine if a roof can be repaired or should be replaced, guiding a buyer through a roof inspection, or helping a seller prepare a home for the market, James brings a level of expertise that goes well beyond what most Realtors or roofers can offer.
As the real estate market shifted, his passion for protecting homeowners and educating buyers and sellers naturally evolved into a full-time focus on roofing.
Today, Roof Advocates of Tampa Bay serves as an independent roof advocacy and consulting company that represents homeowners, not roofing contractors. Rather than selling roofs, Roof Advocates provides professional roof inspections, coordinates multiple estimates from qualified contractors, reviews proposals, educates clients throughout the process, and helps ensure homeowners receive the right roof at the right price.
The company’s mission is simple: provide unbiased guidance so clients can make confident, informed decisions without the pressure of a sales pitch.
James is also the founder of Main Street Monthly, a collaborative direct mail company created exclusively for locally owned businesses. (Click here to visit MSM’s Directory listing.) The name reflects its mission: supporting the Main Street businesses that serve our communities every day, not private equity-owned companies. These are the businesses we know, work with, and support every day. The concept is built on many of the same principles that make Revenue Generating Activities so valuable. Businesses work together, leverage one another’s strengths, and create opportunities that would be much more expensive to achieve on their own. By sharing the cost of marketing, locally owned businesses gain greater exposure, generate more leads, and grow together while strengthening the communities they call home.
Whether he’s helping a family buy or sell a home, advocating for a homeowner during the roofing process, or helping a local business grow through collaborative marketing, James is passionate about educating others and helping them make confident decisions. He believes education, relationships, and collaboration are the foundation of long-term success for homeowners, business owners, and the communities they serve.
